Death Takes Ottoville Lady
Mrs. Eva C. Smith Services On Monday
Mrs. Eva C. Smith, 86,
resident of Ottoville, died at 11:30 Thursday forenoon of last week at the home
of a daughter, Mrs. Bryan Cotterman, in Lima. She had been ill for four years,
suffering from complications.
Mrs. Smith was born at
Ottoville on December 25, 1875, the daughter of Anton and Margaret Janka. She
was married to August Smith on April 22, 1894. He preceded her in death in
1948.
She is survived by
four daughters, Mrs. Leo Eickholt, Ottoville; Mrs. Albert Weber, Delphos; and
Mrs. Milton Bowers and Mrs. Bryan Cotterman, of Lima; two sons, George of
Ottoville, and Henry of Northfield; 21 grandchildren; 85 great grandchildren;
and 1 great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Frank Janka, of Hammond, Ind.; and
Adam Janka, of Cleveland; and a sister, Mrs. George Kachlein, of Lake Milton,
Ohio.
A son, Jack, was
killed in action in World War I.
Mrs. Smith was a
member of the immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Ottoville; the Rosary-Alter
Society of the parish, the Catholic Ladies of Columbia, and the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Services were held in
the Ottoville parish church Monday morning at nine o’clock. The Rt. Rev. Msgr.
J. F. Frommherz, the pastor, officiated. Burial was made in the parish
cemetery.

Wm. J. Miller Died At Delphos
Burial Will Be Made In Ottoville Cemetery
William J. Miller, 69, resident of Delphos, formerly
of Ottoville, died in St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima, at three o’clock Wednesday
morning. He had been in failing health for some time and a hospital patient for
10 days.
Mr. Miller was born at Ottoville on August 18, 1892,
the son of Lawrence and Minnie Miller.
He is
survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Weber, of Ottoville; and Mrs. Robert
Philo, of Bowling Green; a son Lawrence, of Ottoville; 9 grandchildren; 6
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Miss Regina Miller, of Delphos; brother
Herbert is deceased.
Mr. Miller was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Delphos, where
funeral services will be held at 9:15 Saturday morning. Burial will be made in
St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ottoville.
The body will be at
the Kolkmeyer-Helmkamp Funeral Home, Delphos, until time for services.

Roman J. Hilvers Died In Arizona
Ottoville Native Died Suddenly
Roman J. Hilvers, 47, native of Ottoville, died
suddenly of a heart attack in Tucson, Ariz., Tuesday. He was an accountant for
the city of Tucson, and had resided there since 1954.
Mr. Hilvers was born at
Ottoville on March 14, 1914, the son of Anthony and Veronica Hilvers. He was
married at Delphos to Agatha Sheeter, and had resided in that city prior to
moving to Tucson.
He is survived by his
wife, three children, Ronald, David and Judy, all at home; his mother, of Ottoville;
three sisters, Mrs. Rose Allemeir, of Delphos; Mrs. Margaret Pohl and Mrs.
Amelia Zolman, of Ottoville; and two brothers, George and Leo Hilvers, of
Ottoville.
Funeral services will be
held in St. John’s Catholic Church, Delphos at 10 o’clock Monday morning.
Friends may call at the Kolkmeyer-Clark-Helmkamp Funeral Home in Delphos after
two o’clock Saturday.

George Gmeiner
George Gmeiner, 94, retired baker of Ottawa, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday at
the home of a nephew in Ottawa.
He was born Oct. 5,
1867 in Putnam County, the son of George and Anna (Platz) Gmeiner.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Three brothers and two
sisters are deceased.
Mr. Gmeiner was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the
Holy Name Society. Services are at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Rev. Florian
Hartke will officiate with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the McCrate Funeral Home
after 1 p.m. today. The rosary will be recited at the church at 7:30 p.m.
Monday.

Oscar M. Miller Rites Thursday
Ottoville Native Died In California
Oscar M. Miller, 66,
native and former resident of Ottoville, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at
Sante Fe, California, Saturday. He had been a resident of San Francisco Calif.,
for a number of years past.
He was born at
Ottoville on May 26, 1895, the son of John M. and Catherine Miller. He was
never married.
Surviving are two
sisters, Mrs. John Eickholt, Ottoville; and Miss. Adeline Miller of Toledo; and
three brothers, Leo H. of Ottoville; Robert of Toledo; and Andrew Miller, of
San Francisco. Two sisters and a brother are deceased.
Mr. Miller was a
member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in San Francisco.
Services were held in
the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, at 9:30 Thursday morning.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. F. Frommherz, officiated. Burial was made in the parish
cemetery.

Brenda LaDonna Miller
Brenda LaDonna,
five-months old daughter of Ralph L. and Dorothy Miller, Kalida, died shortly
after noon on Monday in St. Rita’s Hospital, following a serious illness of
five days. She was born on October 6, 1961.
Surviving with her
parents are three sisters. Marlene, Grace and Elaine. All at home and the
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Miller, Ottoville; and Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Lammers of Columbus Grove.
Services were held in
St. Michaels Catholic Church, Kalida at 11:30 Thursday forenoon. Rev. Melchior
Lochtefeld, the pastor, officiated. Burial was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery,
Ottoville.

Graveside Rites For Wieging Infant
Graveside services for
Lisa Ann Wieging, two-day old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wieging,
Ottoville, were held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Ottoville.
The baby had been ill since birth and died last Friday.
Surviving are for
sisters, Debra, Marcia, Cynthia, and Linda; two brothers, Gary and Edward, all
at home; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hoehn, Ottoville; and
paternal grandmother, Mrs. Alvera Wieging, Ft. Jennings.

Catherine Leis, Ottoville, Dies
Death was due to Heart Attack
Mrs. Catherine E.
Leis, 73, resident of Ottoville, died at her home at 10:15 Monday night. Her
death due to a heart attack, came unexpectedly.
She was born at
Ottoville on November 8, 1888, the daughter of Bernard and Mary Looser. She was
married to Charles M. Lies on June 24, 1914. He preceded her in death on May
27, 1947.
Mrs. Leis is survived
by a son, Hubert F. Leis, of Ottoville; two daughters, Mrs. Ambrose Koester, of
Ottoville; and Mrs. Romie Lazano, of Delphos; 12 grandchildren; a brother,
Joseph Looser, of Cridersville, and a step-brother, Albert Schmersal, of
Delphos. A son Carl, died on June 25, 1944, while serving in the U.S. Marines.
Mrs. Leis was a member
of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, where funeral services
were held at 9:30 Thursday morning. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. F. Frommherz, the
pastor, officiated. Burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Aloys Weiging Rites Wednesday
Burial Made In Ottoville Cemetery
Aloysius G. Wieging, 63, resident of Ottoville, died
at 3:15 Saturday afternoon in St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima, as the result of a
heart attack. He had been in failing health for eight years and seriously ill
for one week.
A self-employed carpenter, Mr. Weiging was born at Ft.
Jennings on January 14, 1899, and had resided in the Ft. Jennings and Ottoville
communities all his life. On January 23, 1937, he was married to Ledella
Studer.
He
served on the Ottoville Board of Education from 1948 to 1957, and was a member
of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Ottoville, the Holy Name
Society, and was secretary of the Ft. Jennings Council, Catholic Knights of
Ohio.
Mr. Weiging is
survived by his wife; two daughters, Geraldine and Janet, students at Mary
Manse College, Toledo; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Etgen, Ft. Jennings; Mrs.
Francis Heidenescher, Delphos; and Mrs. Agatha Bates, of Van Wert; and four
brothers, Joseph and Lawrence, of Delphos; Anthony of Ottoville; Andrew
Weiging, of Ft. Jennings.
Services were held in
the Immaculate Conception Church at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning. The Rt. Rev.
Msgr. J. F. Frommherz, the pastor, officiated. Burial was made in the parish
cemetery.

Ottoville Man Died Monday
Joseph H. Hoehn, 72,
resident of Ottoville, died in St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima, at 8:15 Monday
morning, following an illness of five weeks. He had been seriously ill for a
week as the result of complications.
Mr. Hoehn was born at
Ottoville on July 26, 1889, the son of Anton and Margaret Hoehn. He was married
to Regina Kemper on June 16, 1915. An apiarist, he had resided in Ottoville all
his life.
He is survived by his
widow; five daughters, Mrs. James Mack, Ft. Jennings; Mrs. Frank Saunderhaus
and Mrs. Richard Wolke, of Ottawa; Mrs. Herbert Weiging, of Ottoville; and Mrs.
Daniel Maag, of Pandora; eight sons, Eugene, of Ottoville; Orville of Dearborn,
Mich.; Victor, of Ft. Jennings; Ralph and Gerald of Delphos; Richard of
Glandorf; Joseph Jr. of North Holmstead, Ohio; and Thomas at home; 45
grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Mary Weber, of Dearborn; and five brothers,
William and Leo, of Lima; Sylvester, of Ft. Jennings; and Rudolph and Gilbert
Hoehn of Ottoville.
A son died in infancy,
and two brothers and a sister are also deceased.
Mr. Hoehn was a member
of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society of the
parish and the Catholic Knights of Ohio.
Services were held in
the Ottoville church at nine o’clock Thursday morning. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. F.
Frommherz, the pastor, officiated. Burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Sister Jeanette Interred Friday
Sister Mary Jeanette,
69, member of the Notre Dame Order, Toledo, died Wednesday of last week in the
infirmary at the Mother House of the Order in Toledo. She was in the 50th
year of her religious profession.
The former Regina
Herman, of Ottoville, Sister Jeanette had taught in diocesan elementary schools
for more than 40 years.
She is survived by a
sister, Mrs. Sabina Wannemacher, of Ottoville, and four brothers, Henry Herman,
of Tecumseh, Mich.; Othmer and Matt, of Adrian Mich.; and Albert Herman, of
Delphos.
Services were held in
the provincial chapel at 9:30 Friday morning. Burial was made at Calvary
Cemetery in Toledo.

Death Takes Jos. W. Becker
Rites Saturday In Ottoville Church
Joseph W. Becker, 72, resident of Ottoville, died in
St. Joseph’s Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, at 6:25 Tuesday evening.
He was born at Cloverdale on June 28, 1889, the son of
William and Bernadina Becker. He was married at Cloverdale on November 15,
1911, to Flora Unterbrink.
Surviving with his widow are a son, Clarence, of Ft.
Wayne; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, August
and Ben, of Cloverdale and Harry of Ottoville and a sister, Mrs. Lee Miller,
three sisters preceded him in death.
Mr. Becker was a member of the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church, Ottoville, the Holy Name Society of the parish, and the
Catholic Knight of Ohio at Cloverdale.
Services will be held in the Ottoville parish church
at 10 o’clock Saturday morning. The
Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. F. Frommherz will officiate. Burial
will be made in the parish cemetery.
The body will be at the Kolkmeyer-Clark-Helmkamp

Carl J. Bedink Died Suddenly
Ottoville Native Is Heart Attack Victim
Carl J. Bedink, 57, of
Wyandotte, Michigan, formerly of Ottoville, was pronounced dead upon arrival at
the hospital on Wyandotte on Tuesday following a heart attack.
He was born at
Ottoville on June 21, 1904, the son of Nicholas and Theresa Bedink. He was
married in Detroit to Betty Walls who died in 195. He had been employed as
doorman at the Stateler Hotel in Detroit.
Surviving are two
sisters, Mrs. Dora Looser, Delphos; and Mrs. Lawrence Brinkman, of Ottoville.
Mr. Bedink was a
member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Wyandotte and of the Elks Lodge.
Services will be held
in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, at eight o’clock
Saturday morning. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

County Native Dies At Delphos
Joseph J. Brinkman Services Saturday
Joseph J. Brinkman,
58, native of Ottoville, died at his home in Delphos early this morning,
Thursday, following an illness of ten months.
He was born at
Ottoville on March 5, 1904, the son of Gerhart and Mary Brinkman. He was
married on May 1, 1928, to Lenore Rellinger. She preceded him in death on July
3, 1960.
A mechanic by trade,
Mr. Brinkman had operated a garage at Delphos, and was also a star route mail
carrier out of that city.
He is survived by five
children, Jerry, of Dayton; Robert, with the U.S Air Force at Grand Forks N.D.;
Mrs. Donald Klausing, Delphos; Mrs. Leonard Klima, Ottoville; and Mrs. Eugene
Price, Van Wert; 17 grandchildren; two brothers, Benno Brinkman, of Kenton; and
Alex Brinkman, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and six sisters, Mrs. Joseph
Krietemeyer, Columbus Grove; Mrs. Albert Hempfling, Delphos; Mrs. Edward
Deegan, Cornell, N. Y.; Mrs. Frank Fenbert, Ft. Jennings; Mrs. Cornell Martz,
Ottoville, and Sister Mary Mathew, C.PP.S., and Kneipp Springs, Rome City,
Ind.; three sisters are deceased.
Services will be held
in St. John’s Catholic Church, Delphos at 10 o’clock Saturday morning.
Interment will be made in the parish cemetery. The body will be at the
Kolkmeyer-Clark-Helmkamp Funeral Home in that city until time of services.

Robert H. Liebrecht
Airman Dies In Auto Mishap Near London
Ottoville Native Resided at Delphos
Funeral services were
held at 10 o’clock this morning, Thursday, in St. John’s Catholic Church,
Delphos, for Airman 3-C Robert H. Liebrecht, 21, son of Lawrence and Frances
Liebrecht of that city, formerly residents of Ottoville.
Airman Liebrecht was
on of four Airmen fatally injured in an auto-truck collision on July 10th
near Denham, Buckinghamshire, England. The men were driving to London, when the
accident occurred.
He was born September
22, 1940, at Ottoville, and enlisted in the Air Force in 1959 following his
graduation from St. John’s High School.
He is survived by his
parents; three sisters, Mrs. Carl Ernst, Delphos; Mrs. Richard Michel, Ottawa;
and Carol at home; five brothers, Harold and Joseph, both of Delphos; Eugene,
of Indianapolis; Cleo, of Glandorf, and Gerald, with the U. S. Air Force in
Amarillo, Texas.
The Rev. Joseph Scholl
officiated at the services. Interment was made in St. John’s Cemetery.

Death Due To Heart Ailment
Carl B. Bendele Interred At Ottoville
Carl B. Bendele, 46,
Ottoville resident, died at nine o’clock Thursday night of last week in St.
Rita’s Hospital, Lima. He had suffered from a heart ailment and was seriously
ill for two weeks.
Mr. Bendele was born
at Ottoville on January 22, 1916, to Martin and Lucy Bendele. He was married on
June 12, 1948 to Jane Lewis.
Surviving with his
wife are a daughter, Linda Jane, at home; his parents; two brothers, Richard,
of Ottoville; and Gerald of Lemoore, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Frank
Gudakunst, Mrs. Eugene Gerdeman, Mrs. Walter Zerkel and Miss Salome Bendele,
all of Ottoville.
A veteran of World War
II, Mr. Bendele was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ottoville; the
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and the Holy Name Society of the church.
Mr. Bendele had been
employed as a set-up man for the Ex-Cello Corp., at Lima.
Funeral services were
held in the Ottoville church on Monday morning at 9 o’clock. The Rt. Rev. Msgr.
J. F. Frommherz, the pastor, officiated. Interment was made in the parish
cemetery.

Edw. Eickholt Died Suddenly
Fair Director Died While Placing Display
Edward A. Eickholt, 71, resident of Ottoville and
director of the Putnam County Fair, died suddenly at 8:45 Monday morning while
arranging a display in the merchants building in preparation of the opening of
the fair on Tuesday. His death was due to a heart attack. He had been suffering
from a heart ailment, however, in recent months.
Mr. Eickholt was born at Ottoville on December 14,
1890, the son of Joseph and Ellen Eickholt, and had resided in that community all
his life. He was married to Mathilda Weber on august 4, 1915.
A director of the Putnam County Fair Board for 34
years, Mr. Eickholt was also a real estate broker and auctioneer for a number
of years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of that
village and of the Holy Name Society of that parish. He was also a member of
the Eagles Lodge at Ottawa.
Surviving with his wife are a son, C. M. Sgt. Kenneth
Eickholt, with the U. S. Air Force, Marysville, Calif.; six daughters, Mrs.
Raymond Brinkman, of Continental; Mrs. Bernard Smith, Mrs. George Mangus and
Mrs. Harold Kohlreiser, of Lima; and Mrs. James Ruhe and Mrs. Carl German, of
Ottawa; 32 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, John C. Eickholt, of
Ottoville; and two sisters, Mrs. C. H. Wurst, of Lima; and Mrs. Grover Bishop,
of Uniopolis, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock, Thursday
morning in the Immaculate Conception Church at Ottoville. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J.
F. Frommherz, the pastor, officiating. Burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Miss Hoersten Rites Saturday
Ottoville Resident Died In Toledo Hospital
Miss Mary Hoersten, 81, of neat Ottoville, died at
10:30 p.m. Tuesday in a Toledo Hospital following an illness of three months.
Miss Hoersten was born near Ottoville on February 27,
1881, the daughter of Florenz and Elizabeth Hoersten. She was never married.
Surviving are a sister, Minnie Hoersten, Ottoville and
a brother, Louis Hoersten, Rockford.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church, at Ottoville where the funeral will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. The
Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. J. Frommherz will officiate and burial will be in St. Mary’s
Cemetery.

Death Takes Hilda Spicer
Services Saturday At Ottoville
Mrs. Hilda Mary Spicer, 54, resident of Ottoville,
died at 3:05 Wednesday afternoon in St. Rita’s Hospital. She had been seriously
ill for five days.
Mrs. Spicer was born at Ottoville on December 17,
1907, the daughter of William and Catherine Greulich. She was married to Henry
Spicer in 1935.
Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Mrs. Don
Kimmet, of Landeck; one grandchild; and four brothers, Otto, of Van Wert;
Roman, of Delphos; Felix and Carl Greulich, of Ottoville; her parents, two
sisters and two brothers are deceased.
Mrs. Spicer was a member of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars Auxiliary at Ottoville, the Catholic Ladies of Columbia, the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church and the Alter-Rosary Society of the church.
The body is at Kolkmeyer-Clark-Helmkamp Funeral Home
in Ottoville where friends may call after seven o’clock this evening, Thursday.
Services will be held in the Ottoville church at 10
o’clock Saturday morning. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. J. Frommherz, the pastor, will

Geo. Knippen Rites Thursday
Was Resident Of Ottoville Community
George F. Knippen, 83, lifelong resident of Putnam
County, died at his home near Ottoville at 6:10 Sunday evening as the result of
a heart ailment. He has been in failing health and was seriously ill for four
days.
A retired farmer, Mr. Knippen was born near Delphos on
May 19, 1879, the son of Bernard and Mary Knippen. He was married to Caroline
Miller, in St. Barbara’s Catholic Church, Cloverdale, on April 26, 1904. She
preceded him in death on September 18, 1955.
Surviving are six daughters, Sister Mary Berchmans, C.
PP S., of Bryant, Indiana; Sister Mary Leonarda, C. PP S., of Glandorf; Mrs.
Edward Kehres, Mrs. Elmer Pohlman and Mrs. Gilbert Hesseling, all of Delphos;
Sister Mary Vita, C.PP.S., of El Cajon, Calif.; five sons, Father Charles
Knippen, of Harington, Nebraska; Sylvester, William and Joseph Knippen, of
Delphos; and George Knippen, of route 3, Delphos; 43 grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren. Six brothers and sisters are deceased.
Mr. Knippen was a member of the Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church at Ottoville, and the Holy Name Society of the parish.
A solemn requiem mass was intoned at 9:30 Thursday
morning in the Ottoville church. The son, Father Charles Knippen, was the
celebrant. Interment was made in the Ottoville parish cemetery.

Funeral Friday At Ottoville
Charles O. Sawmiller, 72, a resident of Ottoville for
the past 41 years, died at St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima, at 12:30 Tuesday
afternoon following and illness of two months.
He was born in Allen County on May 16, 1890, the son
of Joseph and Martha Sawmiller. He was married at Ottoville to Clara K. Pittner
on May 21, 1913.
He is survived by his widow; 10 children, Cyril J.
Sawmiller, Lima; Mrs. Herman Beckman, Miller City; Mrs. Elmer Seimet, Bono,
Ohio; Charles P. Sawmiller, Toledo; Harold A., of Ottoville; Mrs. Leonard
Michel and Mrs. Alfred Heiing, of Ottawa; Mrs. Ralph Menke, Ft. Jennings; Mrs.
Albert Metcalf, Delphos; Mrs. Ralph Honigfort, route 3, Ft. Jennings; 26
grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Sylvia Backus, Wapakoneta; Mrs. Evelyn

Ferd Warnecke Rites Tuesday
Native Of Jennings Died at Delphos
Ferdinad Joseph
Warnecke, 62, a former Toledo resident, died at 7:45 p.m. Friday, at the home
of his sister, Mr. and Mrs. Linus Van Oss, Delphos. His death followed an
illness of two months. His condition had been serious for five weeks prior to
his death.
Mr. Warnecke was born
November 6, 1899, in Ft. Jennings, the son of John Henry and Mary G. Warnecke.

son, Barry L., of Delphos; his mother, Mrs. Mary Warnecke, Ottoville; three
brothers, Hubert and Urban of Toledo; and Albert Warnecke, of Ottoville, and
Mrs. Van Oss, at whose home he died.
