Area woman dies in car-semi crash
Area woman dies in car-semi crash
A car-semi accident at Ohio 49 and
US 30 claimed the life of 32-year old Maria J. Pierce of Convoy. Troopers from
Van Wert Post 81 responded to the accident that occurred at 5:07 p.m.
According to Trooper Deb Tracey,
Pierce was stopped northbound at the intersection of Ohio 49 south and US 30.
An eastbound semi was making a southbound turn onto Ohio 49. Immediately behind
the semi making the turn another semi, driven by Rocco J. Martin, 26, of
Columbus, was continuing eastbound. Pierce failed to see Martin and pulled into
his path.
According to Trooper Tracey, Martin
went over into the left lane to avoid Pierce's vehicle, but was unsuccessful
and he struck the Pierce vehicle in the driver's door. Both vehicles then slid
into the westbound lanes of US 30, closing the left lane of US 30 for
approximately 2 1/2 hours.
Pierce was pronounced dead at the
scene by the Van Wert County Coroner. Martin and his passenger, Latisa L.
Tatum, 20, also of Columbus, were uninjured.
The Patrol was assisted at the
scene by the Van Wert County Sheriff's Department and Convoy Fire and EMS.
The accident remains under
investigation.
Family faces loss of child — again
OTTOVILLE
— When Ottoville’s Norbert (Nub) and Rita Schnipke lost their son, Bradley, in
a tragic auto accident in 1987, they made the decision they were going to “grow
up” with his class.
In the years to come they went to
class parties, attended spelling bees, cheered on participating class members
and attended school activities as though Bradley were still alive and in class.
They traveled to ballgames and supported concerts of students who had been
friends of his.
The grieving couple also shared
their insights with other individuals and organizations who had experienced
similar tragic losses of children. They became deeply involved in Compassionate
Friends of Van Wert, a support group for families who have experienced the loss
of a child. They offered themselves to other grief-stricken parents on a
one-on-one basis.
But the loss of Bradley also
impacted them professionally, especially Rita, who had taught physical
education and worked with those with learning disabilities in the Crestview
school system. Following Bradley’s death, she pulled back from public education
and secured a counseling degree from Bowling Green State University.
When she returned to the
occupational world, it was first as a counselor for Dr. Tom Miller in Van Wert,
and then as a counseling therapist in various area nursing homes. She also
became involved with the Ohio Child Conservation League, and deepened
involvement with groups pertaining to the loss of children.
In the mid-90’s, Bradley’s class
reached high school and excelled in athletic excellence. The girls basketball
team (Big Green), under the direction of head coach Dave Kleman, advanced to
the state tournament in Columbus. Rita and Nub got as close to the sidelines as
possible, Rita as scorekeeper and Nub as “team dad and everyone’s friend.”
They chaperoned team events and
joined team meals at Ottoville’s Dew Drop Inn following games.
Through all of the school
activities, the Schnipkes opened their home for class parties, suppers honoring
class members, and general friendship and encouragement times for Bradley’s
friends.
“Through the Scriptures, we learn
that everyone has a purpose, some talent or gift,” Rita said of that
involvement. “I think everything that happened prepared us for what we’re
doing. It all involves people, and using the things that happen to you to reach
out to them. You feel for them and do all that you can to help them.”
This past week, incredibly, the
Schnipkes lost a second child. Their daughter, Maria Pierce of Convoy, was
killed in an accident at the intersection of state Route 49 and U.S. 30, just a
half mile from the ball field where she donated much of her time to the youth
of that community. Like her parents, Maria had become a friend to youth through
her involvement as treasurer of the Convoy Sports Board and commitment to the
community’s youth football association.
The impact of her life was evident
on Friday afternoon when hundreds of people lined the doorway of Gearhart, Mack
and Jurczyk Funeral Home in Convoy to offer comfort to her husband, Randy, and
their small children, Steve and Angela, as well as Nub and Rita. She also has
four surviving brothers: Michael, Rodney, Terry and Christopher.
Those seeking to comfort the family
brought various types of angels, blankets, flowers and personal mementoes in an
attempt to embrace the grieving family. In the spirit with which they have
served the community, Nub and Rita graciously received their friends and
relatives with gratitude and appreciation.
At the funeral Mass on Saturday,
Randy, through a family representative, expressed his feelings. “Some people go
through life and never meet their soul mate; I was blessed with my soul mate
and my best friend. A part of me died when she died.”
“I had the opportunity to work with
her. I knew her and I know how much she loved her family and this community,”
added Deacon Andy McMahon at the service, which was held at St. Mary of the
Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert.
“There are no answers,” said Rita,
“but these people have been wonderful. Tell everyone how much we thank them for
their prayers and words of comfort. It’s unbelievable, the way the community
has surrounded us.
“It was our strength before, and
it’s our strength again,” she said after a moment of reflective hesitation.
“It’s hard to say, but just tell them how much it means.”
“There’s no way to put it into
words, but you can feel them being here,” said Nub.

Bonnie Marie Kimmet
Bonnie
Marie Kimmet, 38, of Sylvania, and formerly of Ottoville,
whose energetic spirit and loving nature compelled her to lend a hand to anyone
with a need, died Sunday from complications of a cerebral aneurysm at Hospice
of Northwest Ohio.
Mrs. Kimmet was a talented
quilt artist whose painting and drawing skills, as well as her singing and
musical ability brought joy to hundreds of friends and family. She was known
for her bubbly personality, loving nature and untiring energy. She was down to
earth, wholesome and loving, her brother Nathan Ricker said. She helped
everyone she could and never expected anything in return.
Bonnie
had an enormous reservoir of energy and never tired of joining in to make
things happen. “She had the ability to figure out what you needed done, how to
do it and finish it before you realized why you needed it,” said Dr. David
Mallory, friend of the family. One cold winter’s night a few years back Bonnie
decided that St. Joseph’s of Sylvania should have a live nativity scene at
Christmas. A few days later, in her typically joyful world wind style, she had
the entire schedule for the event set. She also made costumes, purchased hay
and helped build the manger scene.
“We
all made quilts in Ottoville, but Bonnie was
the fastest quilter anyone had ever seen,” said Jan Kimmet, her mother-in-law.
Bonnie visited a friend’s son, Louie, in Toledo hospital. By the next morning
she had made a quilt for him. Her quilts adorn the homes of hundreds of people
in Northwest Ohio.
Bonnie
loved to help make other people’s lives better. “There were so many times I
would come home and Bonnie would be downstairs sewing costumes for a play or
event for someone else’s kids,” her husband Mark recalled. More remarkable was
her willingness to do it with a smile on her face and love in her heart.
She
had a penchant for bringing love into a room and making tedious work fun. “She
decided to redecorate our breakfast nook and turn it into a Roman ruin with
hand painted bricks and peeling plaster just like she had seen in Rome,” friend
Barbara Tartaglia fondly recalls. “My husband came home and found Bonnie on a
ladder with her baby in a papoose, pulling down wallpaper. He had no idea what
she was up to, but knew whatever it was, Bonnie would do it well. Later Bonnie
came back and painted grapevines because “there was something else that it
needed.’
Bonnie
was raised in the small community of Ottoville,
where she met and married her high school sweetheart Mark Kimmet. At Ottoville High she was a cheerleader, and had the
lead in the school play for three of her four years. She was gifted with a
beautiful voice and started singing at weddings as a teenager. She also played
piano and danced in recitals. Mrs. Kimmet later attended Owens and received an
AS in Accounting.
Her
marriage to Mark was blessed by four handsome young boys: Alex, 12; Matt, 10;
Jason, 8; and Adam, 2 years old. Mark and her boys were her greatest love. They
attended St. Joe’s in Sylvania, where she was involved in CHRP retreats, was a
Sunday school teacher and later the coordinator. She taught CCD and was a Cub
Scout Den Mom. Bonnie was the Mom everyone relied upon to get the costumes and
decorations done.
Bonnie
never met a person who didn’t become her friend. Her warm smile and delightful
laughter will be sorely missed by family and friends. Friends are invited to
write down vignettes about Bonnie and send them to the family so that her
little boys can read them when they get older and understand what an
extraordinary woman she was.
She was born to John and Jane
(Pohlman) Ricker. Her father survives.
