County’s Worst Accident Claims Five
The winter
of 1983-84 may not go down in history as the worst weather in history, although
the winter itself may be dragging on as long as any. However, for hardship and
suffering, it will have to be the worst.
Weather
conditions can be blamed for the deaths of five members of an Ottoville family
who were killed instantly in a car truck crash just east of Kalida on Route 224
at 5:55 p.m. Sunday.
The
accident occurred when the car in which they were riding spun out of control
and was literally run over by a semi tractor trailer outfit. It was one of the
worst automobile accidents in Putnam County history.
Dead at the
scene were Othmar M. Schlagbaum, 67; his wife, Norma R., 58; a son, Mark 20;
all of Ottoville; a daughter Marlene Kaverman, 24, and her husband Joseph A.
Kaverman, 26, route 2, Ft. Jennings.
Another
daughter Annette M. Schlagbaum, 22, was taken to St. Rita’s Ambulatory Care
Center in Ottawa and later to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, in fair
condition. The truck driver, George D. Schultz, 35, Altoona, Pa., was taken to
St. Rita’s Medical Center for treatment of lesser injuries. Both have been
dismissed from the hospital.
There have
been eight traffic deaths in Putnam County in 1984, and six of them are
attributed to hazardous road conditions brought about by winter storms. Rose
Ann Heck died of injuries received when she was involved in a multiple car
accident on Route 224 west of Ottawa during a severe snow storm on March 8.
Sunday’s
accident occurred near the intersection of M 12 about one mile east of Kalida
during a freezing rain, which left the road extremely slick.
Witnesses
said that the eastbound car in which all of the victims were riding and driven
by Mr. Schlagbaum, spun around on the highway and went left of center.
One person
who arrived on the scene just after it happened, said it appeared as if the car
spun into the path of the westbound truck and truck’s left front wheel went
over the top of it and dragged the car down the road, literally tearing it to
shreds. The car was broken in half and the mangled wreckage strewn along the
highway.
The truck
went off the left side of the road into a field. Extensive damage was also done
to the truck.
All of the
dead were thrown from the car.
The highway
patrol, which investigated, said that Annette Schlagbaum apparently was seated
in the right front seat of the car and ducked under the dashboard before the
impact.
It was
reported that the family was en route to a family gathering at an Ottawa
restaurant.
Five EMS
units from Kalida, Columbus Grove and Ottawa were called to the scene, along
with the Kalida fire department. The highway patrol was assisted by units from
the sheriff’s department.
Five deaths
are the most on record in a single accident in Putnam County. Five fatality
accidents also occurred in this county in 1978 and 1976, the sheriff’s
department reports.
Joint
funeral services will be held for the five victims at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in
the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, of which they all were members. The
pastor, Rev. Roger Bonifas, along with Revs. Richard Dunn and Louis Huffman
will co-celebrate the Mass of Resurrection. All will be buried in the church
cemetery.
