1957 - Ottoville Obits


1-2-1957
Anna Utrup
            Funeral services will be held in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, Friday morning at 9:30 for Mrs. Anna Utrup, 79, who died in St. Rita’s hospital, Lima, Monday evening at 8:30. Her death followed an illness of two weeks.
            Mrs. Utrup was born at Ottoville on February 11, 1877, the daughter of August and Louisa Krebs, and had resided in the Ottoville community all of her life. She was married to Gerhard Utrup on February 11, 1896. He passed away on October 19, 1940.
            She is survived by seven children, August Utrup and Mrs. Lucy Wiechart, of Delphos; Albert, of Ottawa; Anthony, of Akron; Louis, of Leipsic; Mrs. Hilda Pohl, of Ft. Jennings; and Miss Helen Utrup, ay home; 26 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a half-sister, Mrs. Cecilia Vondran, of Perry Okla. She was preceded in death by a brother, a sister, two half-brothers and a half-sister.
            Rev. J. F. Frommherz will officiate at the services. Burial will be made in the church cemetery.

Pamela Honigford (Infant)
            Funeral services were held Friday afternoon of last week in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Columbus Grove, for Pamela Ann, three-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Honigford. The Child, ill since birth, died last Thursday morning in St. Vincent’s hospital, Toledo.
            Surviving with the parents are a brother, Robert Jr., at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bohn and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Honigford, all of Ottoville, and great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wieging, of Ft. Jennings, and Mrs. Louis Schmitt, of Ottoville.
            Rev. Frederick Hug officiated at the last rites. Burial was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Ottoville.

Anna Kramer
            Mrs. Anna Kramer, 80, resident of the Ottoville community all of her life, died in a Toledo Hospital Tuesday night of last week of lobar pneumonia.
            She was born December 16, 1876, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Zurcher. She was married to Theodore Kramer in 1893, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 1934.
            Mrs. Kramer is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Vern Rower, Mrs. Fred Miller and Miss Edna Kramer, all of Toledo; Mrs. Claud Cason, of Miami, Fl.; and Mrs. Charles Powell, of Delphos; a son, Ralph, of Ottoville; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
            Funeral services were held in the Ottoville Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Saturday morning at 9:30. Msgr. J. F. Frommherz officiated at the services. Interment was made in the parish cemetery.

Albert G. Wannemacher
            Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:30 in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, for Albert T. Wannemacher, 67, who died Wednesday morning in the Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek, Mich.
            He was born at Ottoville on July 6, 1889. He was married to Sabina Herman on April 21, 1921.
            Surviving are his wife; three sons, Justin, of Ottoville; Carl at home; and Roman, of Ottawa; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Maas, of Ottawa; and Mrs. Jeanette Schroeder, of Ottoville; six grandchildren; four brothers, Lee, Sylvester and Vincent, of Ottoville; and Lawrence, of Ottawa; and two sisters, Mrs. Matt Schumacher, of Ottawa, and Mrs. George Cassil, of Toledo.
            Msgr. J. F. Frommherz will officiate at the last rites. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery.

Madonna T. Gallant
Services for Mrs. Madonna T. Gallant, 37, who died of complications of a long illness at 9:40 p.m. Sunday in the home of her parents here, will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph Reitz will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
            Mrs. Gallant was born May 4, 1919 in Ottoville, and was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church.
            She is survived by a son, Dennis, and a daughter Suellyn; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Schumacher, in whose home she died; two sisters, Mrs. Sylvia Wylie, Columbus, and Mrs. Rosemary Wensink, Deshler, and a brother, Don J. Schumacher.
            The body is in the Fischer Funeral Home where friends may call.

Andrew G. Wurst
            Andrew H. Wurst, 82, died at 8:30 Tuesday evening at his home in Delphos following a serious illness of three weeks.
            Mr. Wurst was born at Ottoville on September 9, 1874, a son of Henry and Caroline Wurst. He never married. He was a retired carpenter.
            Surviving are three sisters, Miss Ann K. Wurst, with whom he resided; Mrs. Edward Kundert, Delphos, and Mrs. Sylvester Wannemacher, Ottoville.
            Funeral services will be held in St. John’s Catholic Church, Delphos, Friday morning at 9:30. Burial will be made in St. Mary’s cemetery at Ottoville. The body will be at the Klokmeyer Funeral Home in Delphos until time for services.

Louis B. Sellet
            Louis B. Sellet, 78, died in his home at Ottoville at 12:35 Tuesday morning after a serious illness of three weeks.
            He was born at Ottoville on September 17, 1878, a son of Oliver and Wilhelmina Sellet. He was married at Ottoville to Catherine Kramer on November 17, 1909. She preceded him in death on March 15, 1956.
            Mr. Sellet is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Florentine Warnecke, Ottoville; and Mrs. Mary Lou Vetter, of Ft. Jennings; a son Alfred, of Ottoville; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Charles of Ottoville; and Joseph Sellet, of Hollywood, Fla.; and a sister, Mrs. Agnes Studer, of St. Maries, Idaho.
            A retired Ottoville Merchant, Mr. Sellet was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and C. K. of O.
            Funeral services will be held in the Ottoville church Friday morning at 9:30. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery. The body is at the Kolkmeyer Funeral Home in Delphos.

Louise Schneider
            Mrs. Louise Schneider, 83, resident of Ottoville, died in St. Rita’s hospital, Lima, at two o’clock Saturday morning after an extended illness due to complications.
            A lifelong resident of Ottoville, she was born on September 7, 1873, a daughter of John and Caroline Sanders. She was married to John Schneider on May 7, 1893. He passed away on April 29, 1941.
            Surviving are three sons, Leo, of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Gregory, of Ft. Jennings, and Elmer Schneider, of Ottoville; two daughters, Mrs. Elias Kruse, of Elida; and Mrs. Robert Keiffer, of Lima; a brother, John Sanders, and a sister, Mrs. Josephine Bigelow, both of Ottoville; 19 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
            Funeral services were held in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, of which she was a member, Wednesday morning at 9:30 Msgr. J. F. Frommherz, pastor, officiated. Interment was made in the parish cemetery.

Anthony B. Schneeg
            Anthony B. Schneeg, 82, retired farmer and lifelong resident of the Ottoville community, died in the St. Mary’s Nursing Home at St. Mary’s Wednesday night of last week. He had been in failing health for some time and seriously ill for several days prior to his demise.
            He was born at Ottoville on July 31, 1874, the son of Paul and Elizabeth Schneeg. He was never married and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson, of Ottoville, and several nieces and nephews are his only survivors.
            He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where funeral services were held Saturday morning at 8:30. Burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Henry Grubenhoff
            Henry J. Grubenhoff, 81, well known resident of near Ottoville, died in St. Rita’s hospital, Lima, Monday morning at 7:30. He had been in ill health for the past year suffering from complications.
            Mr. Grubenhoff was born at Ottoville on January 15, 1876, the son of Henry and Louise Grubenhoff and had resided in the Ottoville community all of his life. He was married to Matilda Kehres on November 6, 1902.
            Surviving with his wife are six sons, Sylvester, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Gilbert, of Ft. Jennings; Cyril, of Ft. Recovery; Victor, of Lima; Robert, of Delphos; and Edwin, of Ottoville; two daughters, Mrs. Armella Rizza, of New York City; and Mrs. Genevieve Alt, of New Washington, Ohio; and 21 grandchildren.
            Mr. Grubenhoff, a retired farmer, was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Catholic Knights of Ohio.
            Funeral services were held in the Ottoville church Thursday morning at 9:30. Burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Gilbert A. Sanders
            Gilbert Allen Sanders, 5-day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert F. Sanders, of Ottoville, died at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima.
            Surviving, in addition to the parents, are six sisters, Sharon, Karen, Rebecca, Sandra, Christina and Janice; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Metcalfe; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Sanders of Ottoville.
            Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Ottoville. Msgr. J. F. Frommherz will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ottoville.
            The body will remain at the Kolkmeyer Funeral Home, Delphos, until time of funeral.

Fannie E. Wannemacher
            Funeral services were held in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, Friday morning at 9:30 for Mrs. Fannie E. Wannemacher, 63, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edmund Osting, east of Delphos, Tuesday night of last week. She had been ill for a year.
            Mrs. Wannemacher was born at Ottoville on October 24, 1893, the daughter of William and Nora Rekart. She was married to Urban “Pat” Wannemacher on October 27, 1915.
            Surviving with the husband are five children, Mrs. Osting, of Delphos; Thomas, Stanley, Maurice and Jack Wannemacher, all of Ottoville; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Sigmund Rekart, of Delphos; and Ralph Rekart, of Detroit; and a sister, Mrs. Donald Denour, of Oxford, N.Y.
            The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. F. Frommherz, pastor, officiated at the funeral services. Burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Joseph Utrup
            Funeral services for Joseph Utrup, 82, were held Saturday morning at nine o’clock in St. John’s Catholic Church, Delphos. He died at his home on route 3 Delphos, on Wednesday after an illness of a year.
            A native of Ottoville, Mr. Utrup was born on April 9, 1875, the son of Joseph and Ann Utrup. He was married on May 1, 1901, to Josephine Trenkamp at Ottoville.       
            Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Marcella Mueller, Delphos; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
            The Rev. Msgr. Reineck, pastor, officiated at the services. Burial was made in the parish cemetery.

Frank J. Miller
            Frank J. “Shorty” Miller, 70, retired farmer and restaurant operator, died at his home in Ottoville at 7:15 Tuesday morning after an illness of four years.
            A resident of the Ottoville community most of his life, he was born at Bismark, Ohio, on January 24, 1887, the son of Daniel and Barbara Miller. On May 9, 1911 he married at Ottoville, Laura Thines.
            He is survived by his wife; six children, Mrs. Wilbur Wurst, Mrs. Douglas Roger, Mrs. William Lauer, and Mrs. Milan Miles, all of Dayton; Jerry Miller, of Lima; and Arthur, who is Brother Christopher, with the Glenmary Missioners, of Aurora, Ind.; nine grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. John Nolte, Miss Katherine Miller, Mrs. Clarence Crawley and Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, all of Toledo; and a brother, Pete Miller, of Detroit.
            Mr. Miller was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society of the parish, and the Ottawa Knights of Columbus.
            Funeral services will be held in the Ottoville church at 10 o’clock Saturday morning. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery. The body has been removed to the residence from the Kolkmeyer Funeral Home in Delphos.

Victor Kehres
            Victor F. Kehres, 53, of Lakeview, native of Ottoville and former resident of Ottawa, died in Mary Rutan Hospital, Bellefontaine, Tuesday afternoon at 5:15 of coronary occlusions.
            He was born at Ottoville on November 19, 1904, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kehres but moved to Delphos with his parents in early childhood. He came to Ottawa in 1931 to assume management of the second floor of Frey’s Department Store when that department was opened. He continued with the local firm until 1941.
            Mr. Kehres is survived by his wife, Margaret; two brothers, L. J. Kehres, of Massillon; and R. H. Kehres, of Akron; and two sisters, Mrs. Syl Grothouse, of Delphos; and Mrs. Larry Castner, of Akron.
            He was a member of St. Mary’s of the Woods Catholic Church, Russells Point and the Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran of World War II.
            Funeral services will be held in the Russell Point church Friday morning at 10 o’clock. Rev. Anthony Wolf will officiate. Burial will be in the Huntsville cemetery.

Elizabeth Frederick
            Funeral services were held in St. Gerard’s Catholic Church, Lima, for Mrs. Elizabeth Frederick, 87, who died Monday morning in the rest home at Cridersville.
            She was born at Ottoville on May 24, 1869, and she was the widow of Joseph Fredrick who died in 1914. A son Carl, a daughter, Mrs. Albert Yant, both of Lima, and a number of grandchildren survive.
            Burial was made in Gethsemani cemetery, Lima.

Matilda Grubenhoff
            Mrs. Mathilda Grubenhoff, 81, lifelong resident of the Ottoville community died in St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima, Sunday night at 10 o’clock after an illness of three weeks.
            Born at Ottoville on April 25, 1876, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kehres. She was married to Henry J. Grubenhoff on November 6, 1901. He preceded her in death on June 24th of this year.
            She is survived by six sons, Sylvester, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Gilbert, of Ft. Jennings; Cyril, of Ft. Recovery; Victor, of Lima; Robert, of Delphos; and Edwin, of Ottoville; two daughters, Mrs. Armella Rizza, of New York City; and Mrs. Genevieve Alt, of New Washington, Ohio; and 20 grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Kehres, of Monroe, Mich.; and Leo Kehres, of Toledo; and a sister, Mrs. Sabrina Peters, also of Monroe, Mich.
            Mrs. Grubenhoff was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the C. L. of C. and the Alter Rosary Society.
            Funeral services were held in the Ottoville church Thursday morning at 9 o’clock. Interment was made in the parish cemetery.

Albert J. Schneider
            (Owosso Michigan)Funeral services for a blacksmith for more than 50 years. Albert Joseph Schneider, 68, 909 Ada St., will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
            Mr. Schneider died Saturday morning in the yard at his home from a heart condition.
            Parish rosary will be recited at Scarletts Funeral Home at 8:30 p.m. today. Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 9 p.m. today.
            Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery. The body will rest at the funeral home.
            Born in Ottoville, Ohio, September 18, 1888, he was the son of Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Schneider. After attending schools on Ohio, he came to Michigan 30 years ago.
            On October 23, 1913, he married Regina Longmeyer at Delphos, Ohio. Mr. Schneider attended St. Paul Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Nocturnal Adoration Society. He worked for the Ann Harbor Railroad here.
            Survivors include his wife; four sons, Robert and Harvey of Owosso, Kenneth of California, and Dick of Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Louis Wannemacher of Ottoville, Ohio, Mrs. Martha Miller of Troy, Ohio and Mrs. Victoria Vincke of Lima. Ohio; three brothers, Oliver and Edward of Delphos, Ohio and Rudolph of Saginaw.
            Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

Jean Ann Altenburger
            Graveside rites were held Tuesday morning at 9:30 in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Ottoville, for Jean Ann Altenburger, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Altenburger of near Napoleon.
            The child is survived by her parents; three sisters, Kay, Bonnie and Susan; two brothers, Jim and Keith, all at home; and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kiefer of Grand Rapids, Ohio; and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Altenburger of Ottoville; a brother and sister are deceased.

Mary Jo Looser (Infant)
            Mary Jo Looser, 16 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Looser, of near Middlepoint, died recently at the home of her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Adeline Looser, after a lengthy illness.
            Surviving with the parents and paternal grandmother are the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hurry of Convoy.
            Funeral services and burial took place in Ottoville.

John A. Becker
      John a. Becker, 78, of 1909 Wyoming Street, died at 5:40 A.M. Wednesday in St. Elizabeth's Hospital after a short illness. Mr. Becker had been a watchman for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the June & Montgomery Streets area for many years. Previous to that, he had been a telegraph operator for the Cincinnati - Hamilton and Dayton Railroad at Osgood. In the recent years, has been a watchman at the University of Dayton.
      He was born in Ottoville, Ohio and is survived by his widow, Ada A., two daughters, Mrs. Jack Lloyd of Vandalia and Mrs. Forrest Ferree of Middletown; five sons, Arthur of Springfield, Ohio, John, Albert, Paul of Dayton and Joseph of Philadelphia; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Huffman of Columbus Grove, Mrs. Veronica Fischbach and Mrs. Lucinda Hohlbein of Ottoville; four brothers, William of Glandorf, Ben of Frankfort, Ind., August of Ottoville and Edward of Delphos; 23 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Ralph Pahl
Dr. Ralph Pahl, 79, Ottoville, died at 8 a.m. Monday in his home of a coronary thrombosis.
Born Nov. 30, 1878, in Upper Sandusky, he had lived in Ottoville most of his life.
He was the son of Frank and Amelia Pahl. Dr. Pahl had never married.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ed Kramer of Ottoville and Mrs. Dora Bauman of Fort Wayne, Ind., two brothers, Leo and William both of Kingsley, Mich.
He was a member of the Immaculate Conception R. C. Church in Ottoville.
A funeral mass will be said tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception R. C. Church with Msgr. J. F. Frommherz officiating. Burial will, be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Kolkmeyer Funeral Home, Delphos.
