Eugene S. Gasser
Eugene S. “Red” Gasser, 80, died at 9:18 p.m. Jan. 3, 2008, at VanCrest Health Care Center, Delphos.
He was born Feb. 28, 1927, in Ottoville to Frank and Catherine Burgei Gasser, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 16, 1957, he married Lulu Belle Eutsler, who died Oct. 13, 1999.
Mr. Gasser retired as a welder from Accubuilt/Superior Coach, Lima. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. He was a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3740, Ottoville, and a member of the Ohio Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include four sons, Tim (Mary Lou) Gasser, of Sylvania, and Ralph Gasser, Mark Gasser and Jeff (Cindy) Gasser, all of Ottoville; a daughter, Judy Gasser, of Amherst; five grandchildren, Aaron Gasser, Katie Gasser, Hailey Gasser, Daniel Klausing and Taylor Gasser; and two sisters, Marie (Bernard) Gerdeman, of Ottoville, and Woody Kill, of Delphos.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, Edward, Carl, Joe, Arnold, Jerome and Frank Gasser; and a sister, Barbara Kramer.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. Father John Stites will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ottoville.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Jackson Township, where a Scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Agnes A. Stewart
Agnes A. Stewart, 98, died at 5:40 p.m. Jan. 5, 2008, at VanCrest of Delphos.
She was born Sept. 3, 1909, in Ottoville to Jacob and Emma John Thitoff. On March 4, 1930, she married Charles Stewart, who preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1954.
Mrs. Stewart was retired from Myers Cleaners. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Delphos. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary and Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was a very loving aunt, an avid bowler and loved to support sporting events for her many nieces and nephews
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mary and Margaret Thitoff; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Peter, Sylvester, Vincent, Richard and Donald Thitoff; and a sister, Rita B. Miller.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Church in Delphos. The Rev. George Maramkandom will officiate. A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Harter and Schier Funeral Home and a Catholic Ladies of Columbia service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Delphos.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and school.

Agnes E. Knippen

Agnes E. Knippen, 84, died at 7 p.m. Jan. 6, 2008, at Van-Crest Health Care Center, Delphos.
She was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Ottoville to William and Mary Ricker Gasser, who preceded her in death. On Jan. 3, 1948, she married Joseph Knippen, who survives in Delphos.
Mrs. Knippen was a homemaker and had worked with her husband and son on the family farm. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, and its Altar Rosary Society. She loved gardening and had a passion for growing roses. She also loved to sew and work in her yard. She was an amazing cook and baker and was noted for her chocolate chip cookies.
Survivors also include a son, Douglas Knippen, of Van Wert; a daughter, Doris Showalter, of Bowling Green; seven sisters, Regina Boehmer, of Fort Jennings, Mary Ann Grote, of Kalida, Rita Miller, of Warsaw, Ind., LaDonna Ostendorf and Leona (Len) Bruskoetter, both of Fort Jennings, Alvera (Gene) Kleman, of Kansas, and Deloris K. (Tony) Schulte, of Kalida; a brother, Robert (Dorothy) Gasser, of Ottoville; three grandchildren, Nick (Julia) Showalter, of Columbus, Kristen (Joel McKloskey) Showalter, of Asheboro, N.C., and Brent (Julianne) Showalter; and three women who lived with the Knippen family for five years, Deloris Klapperich, of Seattle, Cathy Lammers, of Spencerville, and Susan Kiene, of Lambertville, Mich.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Art and Bill Gasser; and three sisters, Ann Knippen, Dorothy Osting and LaVera Hanf.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. Father Thomas Gorman will officiate. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Delphos.

Lawrence W. Turnwald
            Lawrence W. Turnwald, 93, died at 6:10 p.m. Jan. 11, 2008, at Sarah Jane Living Center, Delphos.
He was born Jan. 14, 1914, in Ottoville to Joseph J. and Theresa Miller Turnwald, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 2, 1940, he married Amanda C. Burgei, who died June 10, 2005.
Mr. Turnwald was a retired farmer. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Holy Name Society.
Survivors include four sons, Richard (Fran) Turnwald, of Van Wert, Thomas (Ruth) Turnwald, of Van Wert, Victor (Bonnie) Turnwald, of Ottoville, and Larry Turnwald, of Ottoville; three daughters, Mildred “Millie” (Oscar) Maag, of Kalida, Julie (Ted) Sadler, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Carol (Jerry) Feldhaus, of Indianapolis; and 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, Ralph and Leonard Turnwald; and two sisters, Helen Fisher and Martha Schimmoeller.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. The Rev. John Stites will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ottoville.

John F. Ruen
            John F. Ruen, 90, died at 8:08 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 30, 1917, in Ottoville to Frank and Mary Schlagbaum Ruen, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 16, 1946, he married Julia Yaufman, who survives in Ottawa.
Mr. Ruen retired in 1982 from the Farm Credit System, after 37 years. He was with Defiance Production Credit for 16 years and was president of the Federal Land Bank Association of Ottawa for 21 years. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa, where he served as chairman of the parish and was on the Diocesan Spiritual Development Committee. In 1964, he was selected as one of 10 men in the United States to be awarded the Pius X award as recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Lay Retreat Movement. A year later he was elected president of the Diocese Council of Catholic Men. He was a lector, an altar server and Eucharistic distributor, a member of the prayer chain and developed a parish directory locating every member.
He was a life member of American Legion 63 and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9142 and Knights of Columbus Council 1757, all in Ottawa. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Leipsic Hunting & Fishing Club. He was a master gardener, a volunteer at the Ottawa Food Pantry and a member of Paradise Pantry Food. He was a 1935 graduate of Ottoville High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division in North Africa and the invasions of Sicily, Salarno and Normandy. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Survivor also include four daughters, Judith Ruen, of Ottawa, Ruth (Dennis) Miesle, of Woodburn, Ind., Carol (Greg) Ruhe, of Ottawa, and Becky (Roger) Salisbury, of Van Wert; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister Martha Ruen, of Ottoville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a great-grandson; a brother, Alex Ruen; and three sisters, Helen Hiett, Marcella Wannamacher and Irene Ruen. 
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa. Father Tom Hemm will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post 63, VFW Post 9142 and the DAV. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Love Funeral Home, Ottawa, where a Scripture service will be held at 2:30 p.m. and a VFW service at 7 p.m.

Roland J. Ulrich
            Roland J. Ulrich, 76, died Wednesday at home in Delphos.
            He was born in Ottoville to William and Agnes (Eickholt) Ulrich.
            Mr. Ulrich is survived by his wife, Jeanine Altman. They were married April 14, 1956 at the St. Johns Catholic Church in Delphos.
            He was a member of the American Legion and a Veteran of the Korean War. He served as Lance Corporal for the Marine Corp from Oct. 22, 1951 to Oct. 21, 1959. He was an avid rabbit raiser for 65 years, won many awards and prizes. He was also very active with his children in 4-H. Over his lifetime, Ulrich owned several businesses including local food establishments and pubs.
           Survivors include two sons, Robert and John Ulrich; two sisters Toni (Earl) Osting and Diane (Roger) Horstman; three brothers, Paul Ulrich, John (Sharon) Ulrich and Arthur (Tracy) Ulrich.
           Ulrich will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
           Memorial mass will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Mel Verhoff officiating. Burial will be at a later date

Mary Ann Kaple
           Mary Ann Kaple, 66, of Ottoville died at 5:25 pm Saturday, Februay 9, 2008 following an automobile accident at the corner of St. Rt. 309 and Redd Road in Allen County.
           She was born September 1, 1941 in Kalida to the late Frank and Mary (Miller) Wehri. She married James F. Schimmoeller who died in 1979. On July 11, 1986, she married Robert Kaple and he survives in Ottoville.
            Also surviving are two children: Carl (Mylinda) Schimmoeller of Ottoville and Connie (David) Looser of Ottoville; 4 grandchildren: Tyler Looser, Jostin Schimmoeller, Kallie Schimmoeller and Amy Looser; 2 brothers: Clete (Dolores) Wehri of Kalida and Hubert (Joyce) Wehri of Kalida; 6 sisters: Margaret (Roman) Eickholt of Cridersville, Agnes Ulm of Delphos, Lucille Schroeder of Glandorf, RoseMary Clementz of Kalida, Jean (Nub) Boecker of Ottoville and Joanie (Dick) Seimet of Ottawa; a sister-in-law: Velma Wehri of Delphos. She was preceded in death also by a brother: Gip Wehri; 2 sisters: Luella Wehri and Leona Youngpeter; 3 brothers-in-law: Bill Ulm, Rudy Schroeder and Joe Clementz.
            Mrs. Kaple was a homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, a graduate of Kalida High School. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
            A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 10:30 am Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. John Stites officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ottoville. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 pm Tuesday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Jackson Township (at the corner of St. Rt. 224 and St. Rt. 634).

Catherine A. Metzger
            Catherine A. Metzger, 86, died at 8:20 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008, at VanCrest Health Care Center, Delphos.
            She was born April 3, 1921, in Ottoville to Oliver and Zita Van Oss Gasser, who preceded her in death. On May 3, 1947, she married Aloysius J. Metzger, who died Jan. 17, 1996.
            Mrs. Metzger was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John the Evangelical Catholic Church, Delphos. She was a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, Delphos. She enjoyed playing cards.
             Survivors include a son, Michael Metzger, of Lima; a daughter, Mary Ann (Daniel) Sherrick, of Elida; three grandchildren, Todd (Melissa) Sherrick, Josh (Kim Magness) Sherrick and Stephanie Sherrick, all of Elida; and a greatgrandchild, Keegan Sherrick.
             She was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet Metzger; and a grandchild.

Thomas H. Bendele
             Thomas H. Bendele, 87, died at 7:20 a.m. Feb. 15, 2008, at his residence.
             He was born Jan. 4, 1921, in Ottoville to Leo and Francis Schimmoeller Bendele, who preceded him in death. On April 27, 1943, he married Helen Buecker, who survives in Delphos.
             Mr. Bendele had been owner of the Delphos Lumber Yard and Cabinet Shop. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035, American Legion Post 268 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, all in Delphos. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
             Survivors also include four daughters, Mary (Larry) Teman and Kathryn Plescher, both of Delphos, Margaret (Donald) Suever, of Middle Point, and Jane (Jim) Reiselman, of Lima; a sister, Dorothy Schmitz, of Florida; a brother, Robert Bendele, of Delphos; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
              He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Critchfield; and two brothers, Rudy and Ralph Bendele.
              Services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Harter & Schier Funeral Home, Delphos, with military rites by the Delphos Veterans Council. Father George Maramkandom will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Resurrection Cemetery, Delphos.

Raymond G. Miller
                Raymond G. Miller, 76, died Feb. 16, 2008, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, following an extended illness. His wife of 54 years was by his side.
                He was born Oct. 2, 1931, in Ottoville to Adolph and Regina Miller, who preceded him in death. On Feb. 20, 1954, he married Ruth Hemmelgarn, who survives in Ottoville.
               Mr. Miller spent summers growing up at the family business, Miller Bros. Clay Works. He worked there for nearly 40 years until it closed in 1989. He later drove a bus for school events and for 19 years hauled freight for Acme Precision Tools and Machine Automatics Inc. While driving, he loved to observe the changing seasons and the Ohio countryside. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Holy Name Society. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 2238 and the Ottoville Lions Club for 46 years where he served as president and treasurer. He was a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3740, Ottoville, and a member of the American Legion, Fort Jennings. During the Korean War, he served as a field engineer with the U.S. Army’s 6th Armored Division at the Granite City, Ill., depot, returning home in 1954 to start a family. He was well-known in the community as a backhoe operator, often clearing neighbors’; driveways after snowstorms. He loved to fish, was a long-suffering fan of the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians and an avid student of history, particularly World War II and the Korean War. He lived in Ottoville his whole life.
              Survivors include six sons, Dan (Linda) Miller, of Hackettstown, N.J., Rick (Anne) Miller, of Cincinnati, Tony (Lois) Miller, of Columbus, Tom (Tina) Miller, of Tipp City, Alan (Cindi) Miller, of Willshire, and Brian (Dorcas) Miller, of Spartanburg, S.C.; five granddaughters, Haley, Chelsey, Lauren, Megan and Leigh; six grandsons, Tyler, Shane, Carson, Kyle, Nolan, and Seth; two brothers, Robert “Cookie” (Louise) Miller, of Ottoville, and John (Janie) Miller, of Centerville; two sisters, Elma (Ray) Kaufman, of Ottoville, and Anna (John) Yaufman, of Ottawa; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Miller, of Dayton.
             He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Miller.
             Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. The Rev. John Stites and the Rev. Kent Kaufman will officiate. Bernadette “Bernie” Heathman
              Bernadette “Bernie” Heathman, 101, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at Saint Anne Home, Fort Wayne.
              Born in Ottoville, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Theresia Becker Schlagbaum, she retired in 1973 from Hagerman Construction and previously at Wolf Dessauer and Superior Fuel. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
              Survivors include son, William (Emily) Heathman of Fort Wayne; grandson, Joseph (Tracy) Heathman of Fort Wayne; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Tillie Spieles of Delphos, Ohio, Dorothy Altenburger of Ottoville, Ohio, Phyllis Krouse and Jo Ann Schlagbaum, both of Lima, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1975; and granddaughter, Terralynn, in 1995.
             Service is 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saint Anne Home Chapel, 1900 Randallia Drive, with calling half hour prior to mass. Calling also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at D.O. Jo Ann C. Honigford
            Jo Ann C. Honigford, 71, died at 9:50 p.m. Feb. 25, 2008, at her residence, surrounded by her family.
            She was born May 31, 1936, in Delphos to Joseph and Veronica Knippen Pothast, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 1, 1956, she married James J. Honigford, who survives in Ottoville.
            Mrs. Honigford was a homemaker and had retired from the Ottoville Bank. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Rosary Altar Society. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, traveling, sewing and dancing.
            Survivors also include three sons, Larry Honigford and Tony Honigford, both of Van Wert, and Dale (Cheryl) Honigford, of Ottoville; five daughters, Joan (Keith) Airey, of Crawfordsville, Ind., Carol (Ray) Eickholt, of Van Wert, Sue (Greg) Gordon, of Indianapolis, Mary (Kevin) Kimmet, of Sylvania, and Judy (Bob) Kramer, of Ottoville; 23 grandchildren; and a brother, Robert (Sue) Pothast, of Mankato, Minn.
             She was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Luersman and Della Rose Hickey.

Maynard W. Koester
             Maynard Koester, 85, died March 12, 2008, at his residence. He was born May 25, 1922, in Ottoville to Bernard J. and Odelia Koetter Koester, who preceded him in death. On Aug. 8, 1946, he married Margaret Becker, who survives in Delphos.
             Mr. Koester retired as a machinist from Ex-Cell-O and was a watchmaker. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3035, American Legion Post 268 and Knights of Columbus Council 1362, all in Delphos. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, Delphos. He was a graduate of Ottoville High School and of a watchmaker school in Kansas City, Mo. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a great gardener and enjoyed feeding the birds. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame.
               Survivors also include two sons, Michael W. (Mary) Koester, and Kenneth B. (Beth) Koester, both of Cincinnati; two daughters, Emilie V. (Fred) Hoffman, of Delphos, and Carol S. (Jeff) Guffey, of Cincinnati; a sister, Sally (Bill) Altenburger, of Ottoville; a sister-in-law, Dell Koester; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
               He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer and Robert Koester.

Richard James Bendele
               Richard James Bendele, 79, died at 4:50 p.m. March 27, 2008, at his residence.
               He was born June 7, 1928, in Ottoville to Martin and Lucy Recker Bendele, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 22, 1948, he married Alice Menke, who died Nov. 5, 2005.
                Mr. Bendele was owner of Bendele Electric, Ottoville, and had served as police chief of Ottoville.   He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. He had been an auxiliary policeman and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid gunman and hunter.
                Survivors include four sons, Daniel Bendele, of Lakeland, Fla., Terry Bendele and Bruce (Lisa) Bendele, both of Ottoville, and Martin (Angie) Bendele, of Cloverdale; a daughter, Michelle Bigelow, of Delphos; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marty Gerdeman and Catherine Gudakunst, both of Ottoville.
                He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Bendele; five brothers, Jerry, Jim, Peter, Paul and Salome Bendele; and a sister, Marie Zerkle.

Alma C. Bender
               Alma C. Bender, age 107, of Sylvania, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at the Sunset Village.
              She was born on April 22, 1900, to John and Caroline Friemoth in Ottoville, Ohio, being the 7th of 11 children.
              Alma moved to Toledo in 1925 and met Edward J. Bender and married him in 1939 and had a wonderful marriage for 26 years. She was a longtime member of Gesu Church. Alma enjoyed gardening and crocheting and was an avid card player. She loved nothing more than spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Bender and 10 siblings. Alma is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Peter) Witker and Patricia Sams; grandchildren, Brian (Denise) Holmes, Terry (Kelly) Holmes, Debra (Gerrick) Monroe, Stephen Witker and Elizabeth (Brian) Reynolds; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
             A memorial mass will be held in Alma's memory on Friday at 10:30 a.m. with a gathering beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Gesu Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd., Toledo, 43607. The Newcomer Funeral Home (419-473-0300) assisted the family with professional services.

Hilda B. Fortman
              Hilda B. Fortman, 86, died at 5:20 p.m. April 6, 2008, at The Meadows of Kalida.
              She was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Cloverdale to Joseph and Henrietta Scharf Wannemacher, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 11, 1945, she married Paul Fortman, who died April 14, 2007. They had been married for 61 years.
              Mrs. Fortman was a homemaker. She had been a secretary at Westinghouse Electric Corp., Lima, and a lab technician at Buckeye Sugars, Ottawa. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Kalida, where she was a volunteer and a member its Altar Rosary Society, where she had served as president. She served on the Putnam County Election Board and had been president of the Band Mothers at Kalida School.  She was a volunteer in area nursing homes. She was a graduate of Ottoville High School, where she was valedictorian. She enjoyed cooking for weddings. Her grandchildren and great-granddaughter were the light of her life. She will be remembered for her quilting, baking cookies and pies, her love of gardening, and her strong faith in God.
               Survivors include two sons, Mike (Jane) Fortman, of Kalida, and Ron (Deb) Fortman, of Findlay; three daughters, Beverly (Robert) Wolke, of Van Wert, Pat (Steven) Nathanson, of Toledo, and Marilyn (Denny) McCollum, of Kalida; 12 grandchildren, Kristin Whitlock, Erik Wolke, Becky Nathanson, Andrea (Austin) Howard, Ross (Missy) Fortman, Keith Fortman, Sarah Fortman, Kyle Fortman, Melissa Fortman, Dean Mc-Collum, Doug McCollum and Jason McCollum; a great-granddaughter, Alexa Fortman; a sister, Juanita (Urban) Selhorst, of Kalida; and a sister-in-law, Jeanette Wannemacher, of Cloverdale.
                She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Fortman; a grandson, Matthew Fortman; two sisters, Rosemary (August) Plumpe and Evangeline (Oscar) Kerner; and two brothers, Herbert and Joseph Wannemacher.

Eric Dean Spencer
                Eric Dean Spencer, 39, of Evansville, Ind., formerly of Ottoville, died April 29, 2008, at his residence.
                He was born Nov. 20, 1968, in Lima to Dean and Gloria Van Oss Spencer, who survive in Evansville, Ind. He had been married to Gwen Spencer, who survives in Cloverdale.
                Mr. Spencer worked for the city of Evansville, Ind., as the lead man for the city cemeteries for the last five years. He had also been a deputy for the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office for three years. He was a member of St. Benedict Cathedral, Evansville, Ind. H was a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 73 Auxiliary. He was a 1987 graduate of Ottoville High School. He was a man of extraordinary talents and an avid motorcyclist.
                 Survivors also include a brother, Judd (Nichole) Spencer, of Cloverdale; a niece, Kelsi Dickman, of Cloverdale; a nephew, Austin “Tazz” Eickholt, of Cloverdale; a grandmother, Dolores Van Oss, of Ottoville; and a stepson, Nathan Geise, of Cloverdale.
                 He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph Van Oss and Howard and Irene Spencer.
                 Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Benedict Cathedral, Evansville, Ind. Father Gregory Chamberlin will officiate. Burial will be private.

Clotilda L. “Tillie” Spieles
                Clotilda L. “Tillie” Spieles, 95, died at 8:35 p.m. May 11, 2008, at Van Crest Health Care, Delphos.
                She was born June 1, 1912, in Ottoville to Joseph and Theresa Becker Schlagbaum, who preceded her in death. On April 23, 1938, she married Ralph Spieles, who survives.
               Mrs. Spieles was a homemaker and had worked at Meyer's Cleaners in her early years. She was a life member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, and its Altar Rosary Society. She had made the noodles and dressing for several years for parish festivals. She and her husband had moved to Delphos where they raised their family and were season ticket holders for the Delphos St. John's Blue Jays for 43 years. They enjoyed going to many sporting events and youth activities. She was a devoted housewife and mother, who's life was focused on her husband, her family life and her friends. In 2002, it was necessary to move her into Van Crest Health Care, where she made herself at home by befriending many and they returned her friendship. This beautiful mother died on Mother's Day.
              Survivors include three sons, Jim (Dolores) Spieles, of Wauseon, and Bob (Lana) Spieles and Chuck (Judy) Spieles, both of Delphos; two daughters, Marcia (Paul) Grothause, of Delphos, and Diann (Ernie) Neal, of Worthington; three sisters, Dorothy (Hubert) Altenburger, of Ottoville, and Phyllis (Robert) Krouse and JoAnn Schlagbaum, both of Lima; and 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
               She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol (Jerry) Honigford; five brothers, Vincent, Ottie, Tony, John and Joseph Jr. Schlagbaum; and four sisters, Bernadette Heathman, Loretta Roth, Marie Kohlrieser and Mary Schlagbaum.
                 Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. Father Melvin Verhoff will officiate. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Delphos.

Robert L. “Bob” Brinkman
                  Robert L. “Bob” Brinkman, 42, died at 7:14 a.m. May 19, 2008, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
                  He was born July 1, 1965, in Lima to Ralph L. and Doris M. Schwinnen Brinkman, who survive in Ottoville. On July 30, 1988, he married Tracy L. Spencer, who survives in Lima.
                  Mr. Brinkman taught second, third and fourth grades at St. Gerard School for the Past 20 years, and played guitar at the school Masses. He was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church. His love of music was continually expressed by playing trumpet for the Lima Area Concert Band for several years and with the bands No Right Turn and The Brass Notes of Ottoville. He coached his three sons’ sports teams and served as a “Pit Dad” for the Shawnee High School Band of One. He was a 1983 graduate of Ottoville High School and a 1987 graduate of The Ohio State University. He was an Army Reserve veteran, serving from 1983 to 1989. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and coins.
                Survivors include three sons, Luke Brinkman, Scott Brinkman and Troy Brinkman, all at home; a brother, Jay Brinkman, of Midwest City, Okla.; three sisters, Bonnie (Larry) Miller and Mary Kay (Tony) Schroeder, both of Ottoville, and Kelly (Glen) Wurth, of Kalida; seven nephews; 11 nieces; his mother-in-law, Sue Spencer, of Waynesfield; maternal grandmother-in-law, Eva Buffenbarger Walper, of Waynesfield; a brother-in-law, Todd (Shani) Spencer, of Waynesfield; and two sisters-in-law, Kimberly (Chuck) Holloway, of Lima, and Jennifer (Jamie) Davis, of Huntsville.
                  He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Marvin C. Spencer; paternal grandparents, Sylvester and Philomena Brinkman; maternal grandparents, Alphonse and Anna Schwinnen; paternal grandparents-in-law, Dewey and Marie Spencer; and maternal grandfather-in-law, Raymond Buffenbarger.

Florentine Kathryn Warnecke
                 Florentine Kathryn Sellet Warnecke, 97, of Ottoville, died at 1:25 p.m. Thursday at Vancrest Assisted Living.
                 She was born Sept. 1, 1910, in Ottoville, to Louis and Kathryn (Kromer) Sellet. On Nov. 27, 1943, she married Albert “Butch” Warnecke in Ottoville. He died on April 4, 1986.
                  Survivors include son Tom (Kathy) Warnecke of The Village, Fla.; daughters Nancy (Dennis) Horstman of Chapel, N.C., Susan Warnecke of Ashland, Ore., and Patricia Warnecke (Tom Lauer) of Washington, D.C.; sister Mary Lou Vetter of Fort Jennings; grandchildren Ryan Horstman, Brian Warnecke and Amy Williams; three great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and friends at Vancrest.
                She was also preceded in death by three brothers.
                Mrs. Warnecke was a 1928 Ottoville High School graduate, a teacher’s aid at Ottoville Elementary School and her greatest joy was volunteering to tutor second and third grade students until she was 90 years old. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, the 500 Club, the VFW Post 3740 Ladies Auxiliary and Altar Rosary Society.

Joyce E. Miehls
                 Joyce E. Miehls, 69, died at 5:55 p.m. June 30, 2008, at St. Rita’s Medical Center. She was born April 21, 1939, in Ottoville to Marvin and Angela Horstman Wannemacher, who preceded her in death. Her stepfather, John Bendele, also preceded her in death. On Nov.13, 1965, she married Jim Miehls, who survives in Fort Jennings.
                   Mrs. Miehls was a homemaker and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fort Jennings. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends, and she enjoyed shopping and vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tenn.
                  Survivors include a son, Brian Miehls, of Ottoville; two daughters, Leslie (Kevin) Trentman, and Kristen Miehls, both of Fort Jennings; three grandchildren, Lindsey, Luke and Nick Trentman; a brother, Dan (Betty) Wannemacher, of Elida; a stepbrother, Don Bendele, of Kalida; three stepsisters, Sharon (Irvin) Schroeder, of Columbus Grove, Janie (John) Miller, of Centerville, and Doris Bendele, of Ottawa.
                  She was preceded in death by a brother, John Wannemacher.

James E. Sroufe
                 James “Jim” Edwin Sroufe, age 69, of Adrian, died at 8:55 p.m., on July 22, 2008. Jim died at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle against cancer.
                 He was born May 19, 1939, in Ottoville, OH to Paul E. and Barbara (Bendele) Sroufe.
                 He proudly served in the U.S. Marines from 1957 to 1960.
                 On November 4, 1961, he married Catherine “Kate” Collins in Hudson, and she survives. Jim had been employed by the Adrian City Police Department for 31 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the F.O.P., the Southern Michigan Law Enforcement, and the American Legion. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed spending time with his family, relaxing outdoors with his dog, Seamus, and farming.
                 In addition to his wife, Kate, he is survived by five sons, Thomas Sroufe and his wife, Diane of Adrian, Todd Sroufe and his wife, Esther of Britton, Terrence Sroufe and his wife, Suzette of Norman, Oklahoma, Tobin Sroufe of Adrian and Tony Sroufe and his wife, Nicole of Brighton, MI; two brothers, Laurence Sroufe and his wife, Betty of Beaverton, MI and Robert Sroufe and his wife, Nancy of Arizona; four sisters, Mildred Parker of Hudson, Betty Gauze of Michigan Center, Ethel Bates of Hudson, Patricia Robinson and her husband, Jerry of Addison; eight grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
                  He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Melvin Sroufe of Manchester and Richard Sroufe of Addison, and his sister, Doris Sroufe of Addison.
                  The Funeral Liturgy for Jim will be offered Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Bob Schramm presiding.
                   Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Agnes W. Horstman
                   Agnes W. Horstman, 89, died the morning of July 24, 2008, at her residence.
                   She was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Van Wert County to Louis and Emma Brinkman Ricker, who preceded her in death. On Jan. 25, 1947, she married Leo Horstman, who died Aug. 3, 2001.
                    Mrs. Horstman retired from Philips, Ottawa. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Altar Rosary Society. She enjoyed life and dedicated her life to her family.
                    Survivors include four sons, Tom Horstman, Mike Horstman and Tim (Eileen) Horstman, all of Ottoville, and Paul (Frankie) Horstman, of Clarkston, Mich.; two daughters, Janice (Ron) Horstman, of Ottawa, and Emily (Mark) Snyder, of Lafayette; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille Horstman, of Fairfield, Tenn.
                      She was preceded in death by two brothers Rudy and John Ricker.

Thomas Honigford
                    Thomas “Tom” Honigford, 73, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Lima, died peacefully Aug. 6, 2008, in Tucson.
                     He was born Sept. 21, 1934, in Ottoville to Joseph and Ethel Schmitt Honigford, who preceded him in death. On Oct. 2, 1970, he married Jennifer Stephens, who survives in Tucson, Ariz. He was a loving husband for nearly 38 years.
                    Mr. Honigford retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Lima. He was known to many as an honest, hardworking, sincere, quiet, devoted husband and father. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, reading, crossword puzzles, good comedies, old Westerns and being with his family. He lived each day with dignity and was loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of having him in their lives.
                      Survivors also include two daughters, Lori (Doug) Schneider, of Hilliard, and Angie (Brad) Flack, of Aurora, Colo.; six grandchildren, Josh, Donovan and Carson Schneider, all of Hilliard, and Alec, Sydney and Cassie, all of Aurora, Colo.; a brother, Bob (Illa) Honigford, of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Pat (Bob) Ramirez, of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Josephine S. Herman
                      Josephine S. Herman, age 96, of Adrian died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility.
                      She was born Dec. 25, 1911, in Ottoville, Ohio, to Daniel and Emma (Brandehof) Byrne. She married Matthew Herman in Ottoville, Ohio, in 1930, and he preceded her in death in Oct. 27, 1964. Josephine was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and had worked at the American Chain and Cable Co. for 38 years, retiring in 1973.
                      Surviving Josephine are one son, Jerome (Gloria) Herman, and one daughter, Mildred (Robert) Perry, all of Adrian; three grandchildren, Randy Perry, Rodney (Cindy) Perry, Kathy Merillat; 12 great-grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, Michael, Chad, Ryan, Chelsea, Perry, Sean, RaeAnn, Tyler, Tori and Zachary; and one great-great-granddaughter, Alexa. In addition to her husband, Matthew, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, one sister and two grandsons, Terry Herman and James Herman.

                        Catherine L. Schmitt Stepleton, 61, died at 3:39 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008, at the Ohio State University James Cancer Center, Columbus, from complications related to her long battle with ovarian cancer.
                        She was born June 22, 1947, in Ottoville to Walter “Fuzzy” and Mary Catherine “Katie” Vincke Schmitt, who preceded her in death.
                        Mrs. Stepleton worked at Philips ECG, in Ottawa, for 20 years and recently at Schnipke Engraving Co., Ottoville. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. She enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.
                        Survivors include four sons, Anthony (Kerri) Stepleton Jr., of Columbus, John (Becky) Stepleton, of Convoy, Charles (Kate) Stepleton, of O’ Fallon, Ill., and Andrew Stepleton, of Shiloh, Ill.; a daughter, Heather Schroeder, of Fort Jennings; five grandchildren, Ashley (Jon) Rose and Eric (Cassey) Hohman, of Van Wert, Caitlyn Schroeder, of Fort Jennings, and McKayla and Tristan Stepleton, of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Kierstynn Rose and Keegan Hohman, of Van Wert; a companion, Daniel Camereno, of Ottawa; a brother, Thomas “Fox” Schmitt, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and a sister, Carolyn Schmitt, of Ottoville.

Mary Ann Bullinger
                       Mary Ann “Toots” Bullinger, 86, of Defiance, died at 6:43 p.m. Wednesday at her residence.
                      She was born Jan. 11, 1922, in Ottoville, to Bernard and Anna (Grote) Horstman. On Feb. 4, 1950, she married Raymond Bullinger, who died on June 2, 2000.
                     Survivors include son Jerry (Joy) Bullinger of Napoleon; daughters Sharon Bullinger and Diana (Larry) Brown of Defiance; grandchildren Sheila “Sis” Korte, Ben Schilt, Jason Bullinger, Carrie Deatrick, Drew and Chelsi Brown; great grandchildren Logan, Audrey, Gavin, Kolin, Kristin, Allison, Jadyn and Ava; and sister Rosemary “Babe” Wannemacher of Ottoville.
                     She was preceded in death by her brothers: Cletus “Click” Cyril “Shrimp” Leo “Lee” Richard and Ralph Horstman.
                     Mrs. Bullinger worked at Riverview Carryout (now Cabbage Patch) in Defiance for many years as a waitress and at Uncle Fudds in Melrose. Her memberships included the former St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Junction. She enjoyed crocheting, the Ohio State Buckeyes, playing bingo, cards and watching softball and basketball.
                   Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ottoville, the Rev. Dave Tscherne officiating. Burial will follow in Sherman Cemetery in Oakwood.

Mildred C. Wannemacher
                    Mildred C. Wannemacher, 87, formerly of Ottoville, died at 12:29 a.m. Sept. 28, 2008, at Van Wert County Hospital.
                   She was born April 3, 1921, in Ottoville to Henry and Clara Dietering Koester, who preceded her in death. She married Richard Wannemacher, who preceded her in death.
                    Mrs. Wannemacher had been a custodian at Ottoville School and the bank. She had also been a baby sitter for several years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. She was a member of the YWCA, Van Wert, and went on several of their bus trips.
                   Survivors include a brother, Jerome (Marita) Koester, of Burnsville, Minn.; two sisters, Mary Jane Burgei, of Cloverdale, and Irene (Don) Friemoth, of Van Wert; and several nieces and nephews.
                   She was preceded in death by six brothers, Roman, Alphonse, Gerald, Virgil, Victor and Clarence Koester; and two sisters, Rita (Paul) Burgei and Eileen (Joe) Sanders.
                   Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Van Wert. Father Mike Zacharias will officiate. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Ottoville.

Donelda H. Smith
                   Donelda H. Smith, 93, died at 10:15 p.m. Sept. 30, 2008, at Richland Manor Nursing Home, Bluffton.
                   She was born Aug. 29, 1915, in Ottoville to Joseph and Veronica Martin Schumacher, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 6, 1935, she married K.C. Brower, who died in 1942. In 1943, she married Frank Smith, who died in 1955.
                  Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and retired in 1984 from Sylvania/Phillips, Ottawa. She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa, and his Altar Rosary Society. She had been a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove, and its Altar Rosary Society. She was a member of the Leipsic Senior Citizens for 20 years and then became a member of the Ottawa Senior Citizens. She loved to travel and camp throughout the United States and overseas.
                  Survivors include three sons, Paul (Catherine) Brower, of Ocala, Fla., Gaylord Lee (Myrna) Smith, of Leipsic, and Merle L. (Donna-Jean) Smith, of Columbus Grove; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Alvin (Bonnie) Schumacher and Martin (Betty) Schumacher, both of Vaughnsville; and a sister, Margaret Smith, of Columbus Grove.
                   She was preceded in death by three brothers, Vincent, Norbert and Gilbert Schumacher; and two sisters, Salome Ladden and Albert Goudy.
                  Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa. Father Alfons Minja will officiate. Burial will be in Truro Cemetery, Columbus Grove.

Alvera W. Koester
                Alvera W. Koester, 89, died at 8:40 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008, at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital, Columbus.
                She was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Ottoville to Gus and Bernadine Boecker, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 13, 1941, she married Richard Koester, who died Jan. 7, 1998.
               Mrs. Koester had been an assistant cook at Sara Jane Chambers Nursing Home, Delphos. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Altar Rosary Society. She enjoyed woodworking with her husband, reading and traveling.
                Survivors include a son, Terry (Sue) Koester, of Rimer; two daughters, Janice (Bob) Etzkorn, of Delphos, and Sharon Wannemacher, of Ottoville; and six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
                She was preceded in death by two sisters, Loretta Obringer and LaDonna Miller; a brother, Arthur Boecker.

Paul M. Gudakunst
                    Paul M. Gudakunst, 50, died at 11:50 p.m. Oct. 10, 2008, at St. Rita's Medical Center.
                    He was born Feb. 19, 1958, in Lima to Frank and Catherine Bendele Gudakunst. His father and stepmother, Marilyn, survive in Defiance. His mother survives in Ottoville. On Aug. 27, 1977, he married Renee Wannemacher, who survives in Ottoville.
                  Mr. Gudakunst was a cook at Lock 16 and the Lima Elks Club. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Ottoville. He was a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Grover Hill. He enjoyed cooking and being with his children and grandchildren.
                  Survivors also include a son, Erik Gudakunst, at home; three daughters, Kerri Gudakunst, at home, Tara (Chad) Eickholt, of Ottoville, and Erin Gudakunst, at home; four grandchildren, Jordan Gudakunst, Damien Gudakunst, Miah Grinner and Kira Grinner; a brother, Gary Gudakunst, of Ottoville; and two sisters, Jan Gudakunst, of Ottoville, and Susie Grime, of Van Wert.
                 He was preceded in death by a grandson, Tate Grinner.

Betty A. Wieman
                 Betty A. Wieman, 89, died at 9 p.m. Oct. 27, 2008, at Sarah Jane Living Center, Delphos. 
                 She was born Nov. 26, 1918, in Hancock County to William Earl and Imo A. Ridge Smith, who preceded her in death. In 1942, she married Ralph Wieman, who died March 10, 1967.
                 Mrs. Wieman retired from the Ottoville School cafeteria. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Altar Rosary Society. She had served as president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3740 Auxiliary, Ottoville, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 471, Delphos. She had been a volunteer at Paradise Oaks Nursing Home, Cloverdale. She enjoyed bingo and dancing. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
                  Survivors include three sons, Ralph Wieman, of Van Wert, Dana (Joanne) Wieman, of Delphos, and Neil Wieman, of Lima; three daughters, Sharon (Ralph) Brickner, of Ottoville, Marilyn (Stanton) Knowles, of Kalida, and Joann (Jed) Gerdeman, of Ottoville; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Bonnie) Smith, of Perrysburg; and a sister, Mabel (Olen) Amstutz, of Celina.
                She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Kevin Brickner and William Eric Ellerbrock; and a brother, William Smith.

Clara Brinkman
Clara Brinkman, 84, died at 9:40 p.m. Nov. 4, 2008, at St. Rita’s Medical Center. She was born March 22, 1924, in Ottoville to Herman and Anna Schnipke Mittelkamp, who preceded her in death. On June 12, 1948, she married Virgil E. Brinkman, who died Dec. 21, 1989.
Mrs. Brinkman had been a teacher at Glandorf High School, St. Gerard Catholic School and Lima Central Catholic High School. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos, and its Catholic Daughters of America. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross blood bank, the thrift shop in Delphos and at bingo. She was a graduate of Ottoville High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Mary Manse College, Toledo. She enjoyed needlework, crafts, bingo and reading mysteries.
Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (William) Gutman, of Las Cruces, N.M., and Joyce (Jack) Wiechart, of Delphos; two sisters, Julie Koch, of Columbus Grove, and Ruth Brown, of Botkins; and two grandchildren, Amy (Joshua) Bayliff and Kristina Wiechart.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Joseph Mittelkamp; and a sister, Lucinda O’Brien.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Delphos. Father Melvin Verhoff will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima.

Helen L. Metzger Miller
               Helen L. Metzger Miller, 83, died at 9:10 p.m. Nov. 14, 2008, at Van Crest Nursing Home, Delphos.
               She was born July 4, 1925, in Delphos to Robert and Esther Bigelow Metzger, who preceded her in death. On June 7, 1947, she married Lawrence Miller, who died April 29, 2006.
               Mrs. Miller was a homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Catholic Ladies of Columbia. She was a member of the Ottoville Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
               Survivors include three sons, Ralph Miller, of Bluffton, William Miller, of Lima, and Kevin Miller, of Waterville; a daughter, Janice Okuley, of Continental; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bette Frysinger, of Lima, and Norma Wannemacher, of Ottoville; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Metzger, of Lima.
               She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine Miller; a sonin-law, Reginald Okuley; two brothers, Henry and William Metzger; and a sister, Mary Pohlman.

Josephine W. Shaw, 90, died at 10:20 p.m. Nov. 15, 2008, at The Ridge at Shawnee.
She was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Ottoville to Charles and Anna Plescher Perrin, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 26, 1939, she married Ralph E. Shaw, who died May 9, 2002.
Mrs. Shaw was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lima and its Altar Rosary Society. She was a member of the Railroaders Wives Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon DeTurk, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Cheryl (Mark) Long, of Alexandria, Ind.; two sons, Gary (Lynn) Shaw, of Akron, and Dennis Shaw, of Lima; two sisters, Kathryn Miller and Mary Grothouse, both of Delphos; nine grandchildren, Kim, Teresa, David, Michael, Cory, Robby, Corrine, Derek and Andrea; and three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Randy Shaw; a son-in-law, Jack DeTurk; a daughter-in-law, Pat Shaw; and a brother, Bud Perrin.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home. The Rev. David Ross will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima.

            Armella A. Turnwald, 85, died at 9:50 a.m. Nov. 16, 2008, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Kalida to Mathias T. and Philomena B. Uphaus Verhoff, who preceded her in death. On June 28, 1944, she married Leonard E. Turnwald, who died April 17, 1990.
Mrs. Turnwald was a homemaker. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, and its Rosary Altar Society and Catholic Ladies of Columbia.
Survivors include five sons, Joseph (Grace) Turnwald, of Kalida, Alvin (Chris) Turnwald, of Loveland, and Carl (Jenny) Turnwald, Eugene (Kathy) Turnwald, and Mark (Robin) Turnwald, all of Ottoville; two daughters, Marilyn (Gary) Holdgreve, of Delphos, and Donna (Steve) Long, of Van Wert; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, the Rev. Werner Verhoff, of Carthagena.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Brother Michael Verhoff, Mathias Verhoff, Ambrose Verhoff, and Victor Verhoff; and a sister, Rosalia Schnipke.

Kathryn L. Altenburger
Kathryn L. Altenburger, 92, died at 2:20 p.m. Nov. 27, 2008, at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
            She was born Oct. 11, 1916, in P u t n a m County to John C. and Mary Matilda (Miller) Eickholt, who preceded her in death. On June 24, 1939, she married Ralph J. Altenburger, who died June 28, 1996.
Mrs. Altenburger had been a beautician, a homemaker and a volunteer at Lima Canteen. She was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church, its Altar Rosary Society and was a member of the Home Demonstration Club. She was an avid worldwide traveler and a member of the Tri-Moraine Audubon Society.
Survivors include five children, Michael (Helen) Altenburger, of Lima, Thomas Altenburger, of Lima, Scott (Teri) Altenburger, of Bakersfield, Calif., JoAn (Larry) Smith, of Spencerville, and Linda (Jerry) Zickafoose, of Lima; nine grandchildren, Maria (John) Sambuco, Diana (Bradley) Sellers, Laura (BJ) Kline, Denise (Kevin) Buettner, Sarah (Matthew) Brown, Matthew (Lorelei) Zickafoose, Douglas Zickafoose, Kevin Altenburger and Emily Altenburger; and 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Roman (Margaret) Eickholt, of Cridersville, and Orville (Olivia) Eickholt, of Ottoville; two sisters: Agnes Ulrich, of Delphos, and Calista (Arnold) Miller, of Landeck; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Eickholt, of Lima, and Delores Eickholt, of Ottawa.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Vincent Eickholt; and a half-sister, Alvertice “Dolly” Friemoth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Gerard Catholic Church. Father Joy Poonoly will officiate. Burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery.

Charles P. Sawmiller
Charles P. Sawmiller, 87, of Ottawa, died at 8:05 a.m. Friday at the Meadows of Ottawa-Glandorf.
He was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Ottoville, to Charles and Clara (Pittner) Sawmiller.  On Oct. 23, 1943, he married Helen Murphy, who died in 1997.
Survivors include sisters Theresa Heiing of Ottawa, Ruth (Ralph) Menke of Fort Jennings, Dorothy Metcalfe of Coldwater, Mich., and Clara (Ralph) Honigfort of Kalida; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers Cyril and Harold Sawmiller; and sisters Mary Sawmiller, Alice Beckman, Rose Siemet and Gertrude Michel.
Mr. Sawmiller Was a United States Army veteran who served in World War II. He retired from Libby Owens of Toledo and from truck driving. He held memberships with the Ottawa American Legion and Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Rev. Alfons Minja officiating. Military rites will follow at the church by the Ottawa American Legion. Burial will take place at a later date in Memory Gardens in Lake Worth, Fla.
Friends may call for an hour prior to the service at the church.

Susan Jane Carter Traser

Susan Jane Carter Traser, 72, of Ridgecrest, Calif., formerly of Lima, died Dec. 15, 2008, from lung cancer and complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
She was born May 12, 1936, in Ottoville to Stanley Warren and Fern Marie Siler Carter, who preceded her in death. In November 1957, she married Francis R. “Dick” Traser, who survives in Ridgecrest, Calif.
Mrs. Traser was a 1954 graduate of St. Gerard High School. She had also attended schools in Chicago and Miami. After marrying her childhood sweetheart and classmate, they lived in San Francisco, Albany, Calif., Berkeley, Calif., Pleasant Hill Calif., and Adak, Alaska, before settling in Ridgecrest, Calif., in 1975. They also had permanent residences in Naples, Italy, and Tepic, Mexico.
Her hobbies included decoupage, ceramics, sewing, cooking, bowling and traveling. She was quite accomplished on the computer and did considerable work on drafting presentation, developing educational material and doing Web design. Her favorite endeavor was graphic greeting card design and, through her wonderful humor and professional talent, she never forgot relatives and friends on their special days or occasions with her Cards Just for You by Sue greetings. A highlight of her life, when she was able, was her twice-ayear trips to Las Vegas with her best friend, Pat. A kind, loving and giving person, she was a friend to all. Even now she continues to give through organ and tissue donations.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas R. (Tammy) Traser, of Bushnell, Fla., Terrance J. (Julie) Traser, of Clovis, Calif., and Timothy M. Traser, of Prather, Calif., and Shanghai, China; and four grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren, three maternal aunts and uncles and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Anthony James Traser; and her grandparents.
No services will be held, but the family asks that you remember her in your own way. A private burial of the cremains will be held at a later date in the family plot in Ottoville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor’s choice. The family also would like your willingness to become an organ and tissue donor.
